Student work rules

Working as an international student in Netherlands

The short version, for students from outside the country. Your own residence permit decides what applies to you.

In short

  • Students from outside the EU/EEA can work up to 16 hours a week during the academic year, or full-time in June, July and August.
  • The employer has to get a work permit (TWV) for you from UWV before you start. You cannot apply for it yourself.
  • Internships that are part of your course follow their own rules.

EU, EEA and Swiss citizens can usually work in Netherlands without a work permit or an hour limit.
