Working as an international student in France

The short version, for students from outside the country. Your own residence permit decides what applies to you.

In short

  • With a student residence permit you can work up to 964 hours a year, about 60% of full time.
  • The employer has to declare you to the prefecture before you start.
  • Work that is part of your course, such as a required internship, does not count towards the limit.

EU, EEA and Swiss citizens can usually work in France without a work permit or an hour limit.
